Week 14 ~ Dec. 4 - Dec. 8, 2017


Happy Monday! 10 days of school to go in 2017!  Keep up with the reading steps and practicing Power Words these next two weeks and then we'll take a break and enjoy the holidays!

***We will be having a special snack on Polar Express Day (the 15th) in the classroom.  We will make Polar Express train cars using graham crackers, icing, food coloring, licorice, Chex Mix and mini Oreo cookies.  We will need 5 containers of whipped vanilla icing, 1 bag of red (cherry or strawberry) licorice, 2 bags of mini Oreos, 2 boxes of graham crackers, 1 box of Chex cereal, 1 pack of paper plates (at least 22) and a box of plastic spoons (at least 22).  Please send a note in your child’s agenda if you are able to donate 1 of these items for us.  I will confirm with you in your child’s agenda if the item is still needed.  And we will need the items by Wednesday, Dec. 13th.  Thanks so much!!!  

This week we will:
  • Review the sounds of /ch/ and /sh/ and /th/
  • Name and read words that begin with these sounds
  • Identify vowels and consonants
  • track print to read
  • use letters and sounds to write our ideas on paper
  • count syllables in 1, 2 or 3 syllable words
  • learn to read the Power Words big, where, yes
  • begin learning about amphibians
  • continue learning about shapes
  • count by 1s and 10s
  • count by 5s

Homework for the week:
·      read for 30 minutes every night
·      log in 2 books in your reading log every night
·      cut apart and practice reading your new Power Words every night
·      make sure you know the ‘old’ Power Words at Flash Speed

Important dates to remember:
  • December 12 - PTA meeting @ 6:45 / 3rd grade Chorus performance @ 7:00
  • December 15 - Polar Express Day (wear your pajamas!) / Last day of school before Winter Break
  • January 2 - School reopens
