Week 20 ~ Jan. 31 - Feb. 2, 2018

Important reminder:  PLEASE make sure your child is reading for 30 minutes every day for Homework.  This is the time of year when your child will begin to make the most growth with reading.  Also, PLEASE make sure you are writing in 2 books and signing the log every time your child reads if you are not already doing so.  Thank you!  Valentine’s Day is coming up.  We will do a Valentine exchange on February 14.  A list of classmates was sent home last week.  Please let me know if you need another copy.  Last thing, I recommend putting an extra set of clothes in your child’s book bag if you have not already done so.  They’re not just for bathroom accidents or spilled milk but with the rain and snow lately, it’s really muddy out.  We don’t play in the mud intentionally but we do venture in to muddy areas sometimes to get balls or run with a friend and may slip and fall and get SUPER muddy.  If it’s just a little on the knees, we can handle that but when mud is up and down- Ms. Stalls, our nurse, doesn’t always have dry clothes available to help.  Thank you!!!

This week we will:
  • Wrap up our study of zoology (We are in the process of making a class book about animals and what we learned.  Ask your child what animal he/she chose to write about!)
  • Begin learning about ecology
  • read Power Words - and why on
  • read other words that may look like PWs (ex.  PW – will à will looks like gill, Bill, fill, chill, grill or PW – at à at looks like bat, cat, sat, mat, hat, that)
  • identify characters and settings in stories we read aloud
  • use letters and sounds to write sentences
  • blend sounds to read words
  • count backwards from 20
  • explore tools that are used for measuring length/height, temperature, weight and time
  • compare the length and height of 2 objects using nonstandard units, compare temperatures (hot/cold)
